Why a wall door

A door in the wall leaves your house doors, glass and security untouched. Your dog gets a permanent way out to the yard, and you stop getting up to open the door.

Aluminum frame. Will not yellow or warp the way plastic doors do.

Clear flaps held by magnets. The double flap keeps wind, rain and bugs outside.

Security cover. Slide it in to lock the opening at night or when you travel.

Size chart

Two measurements decide the size

Hale makes 11 sizes. Measure your dog, then pick the smallest opening that covers both numbers. Tap a size to open it.

The door
Shoulder height (A) Dog standing on all fours. Floor to the top of the shoulder blades, not the head.
Chest width (B) Across the chest at its widest point. Press the fur down.
Flap height The top of the opening should sit 1 to 2 in above your dog's back.
Step-over Standard is 2 in above the floor. Go lower for senior dogs and short legs.
Several dogs Measure the tallest and the widest. One door can serve both.
Puppy Choose the size your dog will be as an adult.
When in doubt Go one size larger. Your dog should never have to crawl or stoop.
Wide, low breeds Bulldogs and similar builds often need a custom size. Text us before you order.
Inches. Sizes and dog ranges follow the manufacturer's size chart. A = shoulder height, B = chest width. Cut-out = rough opening from the manufacturer's wall model instructions.

Your wall

Will it fit your wall?

It goes through most exterior walls, including masonry. Thicknesses below are typical: measure yours.

Wood frame with siding About 4 1/2 to 7 in Standard tunnel Drywall saw inside, jigsaw or reciprocating saw outside.
Stucco About 5 to 8 in over a frame Standard tunnel Score the stucco with a diamond blade before cutting, to keep the edges clean.
Brick About 9 to 11 in for brick over a frame Often a special order Angle grinder with a diamond blade and a hammer drill. Many owners hire a mason.
Concrete block About 8 in of block, plus finishes Standard, or special order if thicker than 10 in Diamond blade, hammer drill and a cold chisel. Plan a full day.
Interior wall About 4 1/2 in Standard tunnel Garage, sunroom or mudroom. A single flap is often enough indoors.

Measure your wallAt a door or window frame on the same wall, measure from the inside face to the outside face. Up to 10 in: standard door. Over 10 in: special order, text us before ordering.
Your size and the studs Giant Wall Dog Door: the cut-out is 17.625 in wide, wider than the space between studs set 16 in apart, so one stud has to be cut. On a load-bearing wall, have a contractor do it.
Before you cutFind the studs, check both sides for wires and pipes, then drill a small test hole and look before you cut.
Installation

Installed once, in an afternoon

A summary to plan the job. The manufacturer's full instructions come in the box.

  1. 1
Choose the spot Between two studs if you can, with room above for the security cover. Check both sides for wires and pipes.
  2. 2
Mark the inside Draw a square, level outline of the cut-out. The top must clear your tallest dog's shoulder.
  3. 3
Test, then cut Drill a small test hole and check for obstructions, then cut the inside wall with a drywall saw.
  4. 4
Drill the corners From inside, drill through the wall at each corner. Masonry bit for brick or stucco.
  5. 5
Cut the outside Connect the corner holes outside and cut with a reciprocating or circular saw.
  6. 6
Trim the tunnel Fit the inner frame, trace the outside wall on the tunnel, then cut it to depth with tin snips.
  7. 7
Flashing and frames Caulk the flashing into the bottom of the opening, fit both frames and screw them through the tunnel.
  8. 8
Seal and finish Caulk the outer frame on top and sides only, so the bottom drains. Glue in the carpet, slide in the cover.
Tools
  • Tape measure, 24 in level, pencil, masking tape
  • Stud finder
  • Drill, 7/64 in bit (included), 5/16 in masonry bit
  • Drywall saw
  • Reciprocating or circular saw, wood or masonry blade
  • Tin snips
  • Latex caulk and caulk gun
  • Construction adhesive, drop cloths
Plan an afternoon in a framed wall. Brick, block and thick stucco take longer.
The one tricky step: the tunnel Owners say cutting the aluminum tunnel is the hardest part. Fit the inner frame, trace the outside wall line on the tunnel, take it out and cut with sharp tin snips, wearing gloves. Cut slightly long, test, then trim.

FAQ

Questions owners ask before ordering

Will cold air come through?

Each flap is lined with weatherstripping and held shut by magnets. In cold or windy places, choose the double flap.

Can I install it in brick or stucco?

Yes. The standard door covers walls up to 10 in thick. Thicker walls, up to 16 in, are a special order. Masonry needs a diamond blade and more time.

Is this the same door Hale sells?

Yes. It is made by Hale Pet Door in the USA and ships to you from their factory, in Hale packaging. We help you choose the size and handle any issue.

I have two dogs of different sizes.

Measure the tallest dog's shoulder height and the widest dog's chest. The size chart then gives one door for both.

Can the inside and outside frames be different colors?

Yes, the manufacturer offers it. Text us the inside and outside colors you want before you order.

What if I order the wrong size?

Text us your dog's measurements before ordering and we confirm the size with you. Every order is checked before it goes to the factory.

Do you install it?

No. Most owners install it themselves; others hire a handyman and send them this page.

How long until it arrives?

Every door ships direct from the factory, free to the 48 contiguous states. Text us and we give you the current lead time before you order.
